Like my sculpture, these pieces are also infused with the idea of capturing light in the North. However, rather than containing and “holding” it, these are more about documenting the magnificent shifts in light in color that can be observed throughout this large, seemingly endless place.
In particular, over the past few years my painting work has been more concerned with capturing the effects of ice fog, smoke, and other atmospheric conditions contrasted against the backdrop of the industrial downtown Fairbanks area that I call my home. When I travel throughout the state I also try to capture those similar moments in the towns and villages that I find myself in.
Rather than being a sad commentary on pollution or climate change, I see these pieces as having a hopeful, somewhat wistful nostalgic notion to them.
Please note this site it undergoing a major revision this week. Full portfolios will be posted by Saturday, 4/2. Thank you for your patience.
